FAQ
Will you have adult teams?
We would love to! Some existing teams have expressed interest in joining the Lions. If you would like to be involved just fill out the form above and add in a few extra details about your situation.
Do I need to be part of an existing team?
No, we are doing our best to accomodate as many young players as possible. Please simply fill out the form and we will be in touch.
Is there a uniform?
We are currently finalising the designs for the Benton Lions uniform with the goal of having it available to start next season. We would love to see as many teams in the uniform as possible, but understand some teams recently invested in uniforms so it will not be compulsory for the first season. You can still play under the Benton Lions banner with a different uniform.
However we are working with uniform suppliers to try and offer a great price for a singlet/shorts/socks pack this season and will keep you updated over the next 1-2 weeks.
What will the fees be?
Fees break down as follows:
Basketball Victoria: $46 per year for 18+ or $32 per year for 0-17 (standard for all Vic basketball players)
Basketball Australia: $5.50 per year (standard for all Australian basketball players)
Mornington Basketball: $55 per season (standard for all players in MDBA)
Benton Lions: $25 per season – set to cover administrative fees, club presentations etc.
* All fees will be taken in one transaction through PlayHQ. The Basketball Vic and Aus fees are only charged once per year.
Will Benton Lions break up our existing team?
If you have an existing team you would like to bring to Benton lions in it’s current form and have it remain that way in the future we will support you. However if a player in that team requests to move to a different team we will do what we can to honour their individual request.
There may be future circumstances, out of our control that may require us to break up an existing team. The only reason we know of now would be Mornington Basketball’s view on ‘super teams’. If your team is attempting to build a super team to win the top division it will likely be broken up at the request of Mornington Basketball.

-
Team Formation Issues: Parents are left to form their own teams, which can limit movement between teams, grades, friendship groups and skill levels.
-
Uniform Costs: If a player does manage to switch teams, they must purchase a new uniform, adding unnecessary expenses.
-
Difficult To Enter: Joining a team becomes increasingly difficult if not done during Foundation (Prep), leaving some children without a chance to participate.
-
New Team Entry: As independent teams we don’t get access to sign up new teams as early as established clubs resulting in some teams missing out on available places.
-
Community: There is little support between Benton teams and many teams feel isolated except for perhaps the one or two other teams closest to them in the same age group.
-
Top Age, Bottom Age: With the date cutoffs for different age groups teams with both bottom age and top age players have had problems between seasons where players have been unable to continue playing with differences. This also causes problems for teams being left with too few players.
-
MDBA’s Future Vision: The Mornington District Basketball Association (MDBA) aims to have every team in their league associated with a club within the next 5 years.
-
High Demand in Benton: Our area, Benton, currently has the highest number of teams entering the MDBA league individually.
-
MDBA Support: MDBA is prepared to back us financially and with additional support in setting up the club.
-
Priority Registration: Clubs like Mt Martha and Osbourne can register teams earlier than individuals. With competition spots becoming scarcer, individual teams are starting to miss out.
-
Access to Training Facilities: We aim to negotiate with venues like the Civic Centre and Benton Junior College to secure access to courts and training times that work for everyone.
